The 2013 RI Butterfly Count Results are in! The final numbers:

50 Species
3216 individual butterflies

Some interesting notes:

  • The weather was poor for both counts--fog and cool temperatures for the East Bay Count, and rain for the West Bay Count. The fact that we found as many butterflies as we did is surprising and indicates a good year in general for butterflies.
  • The number of Monarchs seen, 23, is the lowest we have ever found on the count. The highest number was recorded in 2012: 487 Monarchs.
  • A Sachem skipper was found at Trustom Pond. This is an accidental/vagrant species in Rhode Island and has never before been recorded on the count.

Thank you to everyone who participated!
